I think of the Orion program as the descendant of the Apollo program. In this case, rather than shoot for the moon, we’re shooting for deep space. And this morning’s launch will be the start of a grand adventure.
This morning’s launch, now scrubbed, is an unmanned flight of the Orion spacecraft, which will test a number of systems and functions in a brief trip around the Earth, before splashing down of sunny, warm Baja California. The space capsule will be picked up in the well deck of USS Anchorage, and if all goes well, NASA will have terabytes of data to study as their Christmas present.
